Ponte have had a bright start to their 17/18 season with a good testing preseason. The lads have trained hard in preparation for the return to the NCEL Premier division.

Ponte started away at Boroughbride AFC, who play in the West Yorkshire league, some good positive attacking football was on show and the fixture saw Ponte leave with a 6-1 win following goals from Mickey Dunn x2, Jordan Turner and first goals for Eli Hey and Vaughan Redford x2.

Ponte the faced tougher opposition against Rossington Main. Rossington have looked good this preseason and have put together what looks like a good young squad. Both teams started well but Ponte took the lead through Mickey Dunn, Jordan Turner also got on the score-sheet but with the game at 2-2 with not much time left on the clock Eli Hey stepped up to secure the win and make it two wins from two.

The following Saturday we faced another NCEL Division One side in Selby Town. Both sides looked in the early stages like they were happy to play flowing, attacking football.

Ponte took the lead through Vaughan Redford following a brilliant ball from the right and an exquisite touch from Redford made the opportunity to go a goal up a simple one! Early in the second half Eli Hey scrambled the ball home to make it 2-0 and with 6 minutes left Jordan Turner ensured that all three strikers had got on the score-sheet in all three of the first games to seal it, 3-0.

The Colls continued their pre-season campaign with their first home game at The Harratts Nissan Stadium with the visitors being Shaw Lane of the Evo Stik Premier.

Ponte started brightly again and looked to have the visitors rocked! Plenty of meaty challenges going in from both sides, a proper test for both. Shaw Lane took the lead but were quickly pegged back through goals from Chris Jackson and Eli Hey and Ponte were on top.

The game erupted around the hour mark after Ponte had numerous chances to extend their lead, were reduced to 10 men after an incident near the Shaw Lane dugout. This gave Shaw Lane the initiative and scored twice in the final 15 minutes to secure the win over the unlucky Ponte side who still could of snatched a draw late on.

Sadly the game was marred by what looked a serious injury to Matty Davies of Shaw Lane, now confirmed as a double break of his leg. Everyone at Ponte sends our best wishes to Matty as well as a speedy recovery!

Ponte suffered their second defeat in two at the Hands of another Evo Stik side Frickley. Ponte started bright once again and had lead through another Chris Jackson goal and played some good stuff in the early stages but were pegged back and were 2-1 behind at the break.

Ponte seemed unsettled by regular changes to the side and Frickley took advantage of the long ball tactic and two penalties and extended their lead to 6-1, a tough test but a lot will have been learnt going into the new league campaign.

Up next for Ponte is an away trip to Glasshoughton on Tuesday (25/07/17) for the Bill Cook Memorial Trophy, won last year by Ponte and will be looking to retain the trophy.

They end their pre-season campaign with two away trips Saturday 29th away at Horbury Town and Monday 31st away at Huddersfield YMCA.
