After back to back promotions for Ponte it meant that this year would be our first ever EvoStik campaign in the clubs history!
Ponte secured promotion on the final day of the NCEL Division One a little over two years ago now, we followed that achievement up by shocking everyone to be NCEL Premier League Champions for the 17/18 season!
After surpassing most expectations and many records on the way, Ponte headed into their inaugural EvoStik Northern Premier East League high in confidence with a few good new additions and maintaining a lot of the squad who got the club this far!
With some good results and performances pre season we headed into this weekends season opener versus Lincoln United fully prepared and full of high hopes!
Ponte couldn’t of got off to a better start! They got out of the blocks early and pressured Lincoln high up the field and after good build up play, wide man Tom Dugdale crossed for Eli Hey to scramble home at the near post (5 min)!
Lincoln worked their way back into the game and started to have a bit of success off of good hold up play from Lincoln forward Kevin Memagou, but were unable to finish off any of the chances they created!
As the Half Time whistle sounded both Craig’s (Parry and Rouse) will have been pleased with their side and probably deserved their one goal lead!
The home side will have been expecting an onslaught from the away side as they looked to get back into the game but again couldn’t take their good territory for granted.
Ponte could of had a second if it weren’t for a cracking save from the Lincoln no. 1, denying Vaughan Redford when one on one and then the ball fortunately bouncing back into the keepers arms via the post!
The Colls finally did get their second shortly after with 20 minutes to go! Mikey Dunn picked the ball up on the left hand side of Lincoln’s box, jinked past three players before setting up Eli Hey who slotted home (71 mins)!
Since going two goals to the good, Ponte now looked comfortable and were playing some really good stuff!
The cherry on top of a brilliant result was fired home (81 mins) by new man Connor Smythe, the left back has enjoyed a prolific pre season and continued that with a peach of a strike that three keepers wouldn’t of saved!
Three nil The Colls triumphed, the second half was a brilliant display and thoroughly deserved! Our first game at this level and not a half bad start!
